Wicomico County, Maryland Substance Abuse Statistics
Wicomico County, located in Maryland, has been facing a significant substance abuse problem in recent years[1]. According to the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, the county had a drug overdose death rate of 9.6 per 100,000 people in 2010[2]. This rate increased to 18.6 per 100,000 people in 2019[3]. The county health department has been working to combat substance abuse by providing education and resources to the community. However, the problem persists, and the county continues to see high rates of substance abuse. The types of drugs commonly abused in Wicomico County include opioids, cocaine, marijuana, and hallucinogens[1].
The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported that in 2019, 8.4% of adults in the county had used illicit drugs in the past month[4]. Additionally, the NSDUH found that 3.6% of adults in the county had used prescription pain relievers for non-medical purposes in the past year. These statistics indicate a significant substance abuse problem in the county.
Substance abuse-related crime and overdose deaths are major concerns in Wicomico County[5]. In 2020, there were 47 overdose deaths in the county, with 39 of those deaths being opioid-related[3]. This represents a significant increase from the 41 total deaths in 2019. The county has also seen an increase in drug-related crime, including drug possession and drug trafficking[6]. Despite these challenges, there have been some positive developments in the county. For example, from January to June 2017, the county saw 19 lives lost to drug overdoses, but by the same period in 2021, that number had dropped to 10[7]. However, it is clear that substance abuse remains a significant issue in Wicomico County, and continued efforts are needed to address it.
