Anne Arundel County, Maryland Substance Abuse Statistics
Anne Arundel County, Maryland has a significant substance abuse problem, with a high number of drug-induced deaths[1]. According to the Anne Arundel County Department of Health, the county ranks third highest in Maryland for deaths due to opioid misuse[2]. However, there is some positive news, as opioid overdoses and fatalities in the county and Annapolis decreased between 2021 and 2022[3]. The annual Report Card of Community Health Indicators provides a brief overview of the health status of Anne Arundel County, including information on substance abuse[4]. The report highlights the prevalence of substance abuse in the county, making it clear that substance abuse is a significant issue that needs to be addressed.
The types of substances commonly abused in Anne Arundel County include opioids, prescription drugs, and marijuana. Prescription drug misuse is second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in the United States[1]. Heroin use is also a significant problem, with many medical and social consequences, including hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, fetal and infant mortality, crime, and violence[5].
While violence is typically not associated with marijuana abuse in Maryland, violence associated with marijuana distribution and cannabis cultivation is a serious concern[6]. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides estimates of substance use and mental illness at the national, state, and substate levels[7].
Demographics and risk factors for substance abuse in Anne Arundel County include young adults aged 18 to 25, who report the highest percentage of past-month illicit drug abuse in Maryland[8]. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in Anne Arundel County is also a risk factor for substance abuse and related health problems[4]. More than one in seven individuals affected with serious mental illnesses in Maryland report substance abuse[9]. It is essential to address these risk factors and demographics to reduce substance abuse rates in Anne Arundel County. By providing education and resources to those at risk, the county can work towards reducing drug-induced deaths and improving the overall health of its residents.
